A Warhammer 40,000 3rd Edition battle report. Published April 2004.
After a 4 month break from gaming to get some armies painted, it seemed about time to get back into the hacking and the slashing and the shooting … oi! So, Captain Bob brought around his Guard and Ultramarines for a weekend of mindless slaughter…
We had 4 games over the course of the day: Necrons vs Guard, Red Corsairs vs Ultramarines, Dark Eldar vs Necrons, and this one, featuring my lovable, cuddly Death Guard force against Captain Bob’s Ultramar PDF, with 1000 points per side. Army lists as follows:
Sorcerer Lord Phestus and his Death Guard
- Phestus, Sorcerer of Nurgle
- 7 x Chosen Terminators
- 7 x Plague Marines
- 7 x Nurgling Bases
- Predator with Autocannon
- Predator with Twin-linked Lascannon
Ultramar PDF Force
- Command Squad with attached Commissar
- Infantry Platoon
- Armoured Fist Squad
- Hellhound
- Sentinel with Multilaser
- Sentinel with Lascannon
- Leman Russ
- Basilisk
Setup
The mission was a Patrol, the PDF having sent out a platoon to investigate some reports of little cuddly critters infesting a nearby ruined town. Upon their arrival, the platoon found a small horde of Nurglings oozing about, leaving rubbish under their seats and smelling rather unpleasant.

(It was at about this point that I called Ophelia over with a cry of ‘Now, does this look fair to you?’ She seemed remarkably unsympathetic.)
Captain Bob rolled highest for the turn, and most magnanimously allowed me to go first. After thinking through various tactical scenarios (all pretty much involving my Nurglings just advancing in the general direction of the Guard units) I advanced my Nurglings in the general direction of the guard units.

The Guard moved up through the ruins, while their Command section stayed heroically at the rear. At the same time, the Sentinels advanced between the buildings, spreading out to cover the open fire-lanes.

Turn 2, and some rather nice dice-rolling saw the entire Nurgle force, aside from the Sorcerer, suddenly appear on the horizon. Clearly the Nurglings were sent out merely to lure the unwary Guard into a nasty, phlegmy trap…

(It was at about this point that Captain Bob exclaimed ‘Now, does this look fair to you?’ I was remarkably unsympathetic.)
As they rumbled up onto the board, both Predators opened fire with their turret weapons. ( A sound decision, those being the only guns they were equipped with and all…) A hail of Autocannon fire tore through the Multilaser Sentinel, ripping the vehicle to pieces, while a Lascannon blast from the second Predator punctured the fuel tanks of the other Sentinel. With an earth-shattering kaboom, the former Sentinel was thrown into the air, crashing down into the ruins in the center of a suddenly rather nervous Guard squad.

As pieces of Sentinel rained down upon the battlefield like pointy, green snow, the PDF’s Command HQ ran onto the field, taking up position behind the second infantry squad.
