A Warhammer 40,000 3rd Edition battle report. Published October 2003.
This was a 1500 point battle, my Orks against Captain Bob’s Cadians. Since it had been a while since either of us played, we just played a ‘Kill each other for 6 turns and see what’s left’-type game, to re-familiarise ourselves with what we were doing. No Trial Assault Rules, or Trial Vehicle Rules, just standard Rulebook stuff.
Aside from the incessant need for both of us to check up on forgotten rules, it worked out quite well, and much fun was had by all.
Rough lists:
Waaagh Biglug
- Warboss Biglug, with retinue (9) including Dok and Mek in a Trukk.
- Stormboyz (10) with Nob and Attack Squig.
- Warbikes (5)
- Buggies (3): Twin Big Shoota, Twin Rokkits, Mega Blasta
- C3POrk and Waagh2D2 (Kanz)
- Da Krusha (Dredd).
- Grotz (19) with Slaver and Hound.
- 2 mobz of Slugga Boyz with Nobz.
Cadians
(This may not be quite right, as I’m going from memory, and don’t have the new Guard Codex yet.)
Command HQ with Commissar
- 2 Infantry Platoons
- 3 Heavy Weapons squads (3 lascannons, 3 mortars, 2 Heavy Bolters & Autocannon)
- 2 Sentinels
- 2 Leman Russ Battle Tanks
Setup
The table was a fairly terrain-heavy ruined city; flat ground but a lot of obstacles.
The Waaagh deployed mostly across the left side of the board, with just the Kanz and Buggies facing off against the tanks, a single sentinel, and a platoon of infantry on the right flank.
The Guard were spread fairly well across the board, due to there being so many of the little buggers…

‘Ere we go, ‘ere we go, ‘ere we go…
First turn saw the Waaagh surge rather turbidly across the board… Biglug’s trukk shot up the extreme left flank, aiming to get past a small cluster of buildings, ready to jump out and glare in a menacing fashion at the opposing infantry:

The Turbo-booster kicked in to give the trukk a little more oomph, but a roll of a 5 meant no disembarking this turn, and a rather peachy LOS from a lascannon-equipped Sentinel… Oops.
The Bikes and Boyz all moved straight ahead, with the Grotz somehow left picking up the rear. The Stormboyz hit their big red buttons, and soared straight over their comrade’s heads, landing in front of the tall center building, moving in for a quick, refreshing can of Sprite…

The Buggies and Kanz on the right flank also moved up, trying to get a bead on those Russes before they had a chance to get too rough.
Shooting was typically Orky, with the Buggies all missing completely, and the Boyz big shootas managing to take out a handful of Guardsmen.
The Guard promptly answered with return fire, a lascannon blast from the Sentinel punching straight through the front armour of Biglug’s Trukk. As the dust settled, the Boss Mob crawled from the smoking heap, leaving the bodies of the Mek and Dok behind…

On the other flank, combined fire from a Russ and multi-laser Sentinel sent all three Buggies flying.
