Our team of judges this year consisted of myself, my wife M, Jon ‘Yakface’ Regul of Dakka Dakka], and Sebastian ‘Automaton’ Archer of Oz Painters and Guild of Harmony. Our thanks to Jon and Sebastian for their assistance.
Each judge ranked the entries based on standard of painting and theme, with rankings awarded points on a sliding scale. The entry with the most points is the winner.
So, for this year’s Shades of Red, I would like to congratulate Tom Kerr for his winning ‘Squig Race‘ entry.
And our random prizewinner, chosen using the random number generator here is “The Dreadnote”, for his Zombie Hunter diorama.
You can see the other entries, and a bigger pic of the winner, in the gallery here.
Thanks to those who entered. While the entries were low again this year, it’s always fun to see where people take a given theme.

Well, entries for the Dynamic Duos comp have been a little light-on so far, with quite a few would-be entrants saying that they just ran out of time to get theirs finished.
I also have a family funeral this week, making judging a little problematic and not really the first thing on my mind…
So, I have decided to extend the deadline to the 7th of May. If you have an entry nearly finished, you now have an extra week to finish it off. If you have already submitted an entry, feel free to take the extra time to tweak it and resubmit if you feel so inclined. And if you haven’t started an entry yet, I would point out that the low number of entries so far means really good odds on winning the random prize… ;)

It’s April (Under The Couch’s 5th birthday!), and that means it’s time for another Shades of Red painting competition!
It’s also a mere 2 weeks since I got married, and so I thought it would be fitting to run a competition that’s themed around togetherness. And so, Shades of Red 5 is entitled: Dynamic Duos!
What we’re looking for is a pair of miniatures that look like they belong together. A wizard and his familiar, a pair of matched assassins, a hero and his faithful sidekick, twins separated at birth and finding themselves on opposing armies, the timeless wanderer and his eternal nemesis… The possibilities are endless.
Up for grabs is a first prize of miniatures to a value of AU$165, and a random prize of a AU$50 boxed set. Entries close at the end of April.
Full details and information on how to enter can be found here.

After much deliberation, we’re pleased to announce that the winner of this year’s Shades of Red painting competition, Fear the Darkness, is Robert Sakaluk, with his wonderful fireball-throwing wizard.
Congratulations also to Daniel Wainwright, who’s Varghulf was selected as this year’s random prize winner.
Thanks to those who entered, to our judges, and to Milsims for their assistance with prizes.
You can find all of the entries from this year and the previous competitions in the Gallery, and a brief note on how the winner was selected over on the Forums. Feel free to pop in and leave a comment.

Thanks to all who entered. It’s always fun to see how different people interpret a given theme.

The 1st of April is Under The Couch’s 4th birthday, and as has become a birthday custom, we’re launching our next painting competition.
The theme this time around is “Fear the Darkness.”
What we’re looking for is miniatures themed around the darkness: things that go bump in the night, a soldier kitted out for skulking in the dark, a wizard holding his glowing staff on high (with corresponding fancy on-source lighting effects), or anything else that you might find lurking midway down a dark alley.
The comp runs until the end of the month, with the winner receiving their choice of a Warhammer 40K Battleforce, a WHFB Battalion box, or an Under The Couch custom conversion at up to $150 value.
Full details and rules can be found here.
And for the curious, past competition entries can be found in the gallery here.

So, while I was looking into setting up this year’s painting competition (coming very soon…) I realised that something was missing from the Gallery…
Somewhere along the line while updating the gallery software and repairing the site after some server issues, I lost the Shades of Red galleries.
Well, after digging out all of the pics, the galleries for the 3 competitions are now back online here.
On a related note, I seem to have lost track of just who painted this entry.
If you were the painter, or know who it was, please pop on over to the forums and let me know.

After much deliberation, the scores from the judges have been compiled, and a random number drawn by the complex process of throwing a multi-sided random number generation device onto a flat, multi-purpose display and support surface (we threw a die onto a table) and so we have our winners…
So, congratulations to Adrian Williams, who won the 1st prize, and Nathan Hattersley, who scored the random prize!
You can see all of the entries in the gallery here.
Thanks to all who entered this year. It’s always interesting to see what people do with a given theme. We’re already looking at ideas for the next comp… :)
A big thanks also to Milsims for their continued support of the Shades of Red competitions.

Well, the deadline has been and gone, entries have been received, and judges are hard at work picking a winner for the Shades of Red 3: Flames of Wrath competition.
The difficult job of choosing a winner this year goes to myself, my fiance M, Colin and crew from Milsims, and the elusive Jon ‘Yakface’ Regul of DakkaDakka.
We’ll hopefully have the results for you within a couple of days. In the meantime, you can have a look at the entries in the gallery here.

It’s April, and Under The Couch has just turned 3! Which means it must be time for another Shades of Red painting competition.
We’re doing something slightly different this time around, and introducing a more focused theme, which we’re calling: Flames of Wrath!
We’re looking for miniatures themed around fire… holding a torch, bearing a flame motif on their shield or armour, made of fire, whatever you can come up with.
One winner will be chosen based on a combination of painting and theme, and will win their choice of a Warhammer 40K Battleforce, WHFB Battalion, or an Under The Couch custom miniature conversion of their own design.
As usual we also have a random prize, which this time around is a Warhammer 40K or WHFB squad box, or the 30th Anniversary White Dwarf miniature.
Full details can be found here.
